Saludos desde Mexico City!

I’m on Day 3 of my 2017 Remote Year and it’s already been a whirlwind here in CDMX! I have not yet been hospitalized by the spicy food, so that’s an accomplishment.

I thought as a first post it might be helpful to highlight a few things you should know about this program before I start posting regularly.

What is Meraki?

Our “tribe” name (yea, yea everyone get your laughs out). Each “itinerary” has a name so you know what group you’re apart of (there are 4 “tribes” traveling right now and we are all part of one Slack group – so it helps).

Modern Greeks use the word meraki (pronounced: may-rah-kee) to describe what happens when you leave a piece of yourself—your soul, creativity, or love—in your work. Remember that work doesn’t directly translate to career; it’s more about doing something you love so much that you put a piece of yourself into it.

Where will I be each month?

Here!

Who am I traveling with?

So far I’ve met a few software engineers, a few graphic designers and UX designers (some freelance, so potential to tap into that), programmers (app and web developers), a writer for USA Today, a traveling nurse, a landscape/architecture photographer, a lawyer and even a woman who has her own perfume line (sold at Barney’s – ever heard of Yosh?)

What kind of stuff do we get to do?

You mean aside from traveling the world? There are people constantly organizing dinners, workouts, side trips, etc. via Slack – it’s crazy (yes, it’s only been 3 days). But the best thing is the local tracks offered through the program – in each city we will choose a track of activities for the month that have been categorized like “Made in Mexico,” “Ways of Life,” “Sustaining City Life,” “Deep Roots,” “Creative Creations.” I’m doing Sustaining City Life and will get to meet a Chaman, hear a talk from the only vegan food bike delivery company, go to a yoga class, visit a traditional sweat lodge, and hike Tepotzlan.

More activities are organized by the program leaders (Zoe and Matty) who will travel with us the whole year and each city has city managers who help coordinate experiences and transportation. I’ve got to imagine it’s like show site for them…every week.

It’s a lot to take in, but I’m ready to go!

Happy New Year and here’s to a great 2017!

And just for fun, I’m going to try to do a playlist for each city – this was my “Pre” playlist (Volume 1 credit to John Hess):
